Maybe you’ve been searching for a way to propose for a while or maybe this was your plan all along, but you’ve now got the idea to do it at the finish line. I get it, you’re about to conquer an Ironman or a half and it does sound kind of neat, but allow me to be the voice of reason and tell you why you shouldn’t.
First of all, you’re stealing the spotlight. You’ve decided to make this grand gesture to your significant other at the very same place where everyone else is trying to celebrate their moment of triumph. Let’s not forget your proposal is probably in the background of a lot of participants finishing photos. Kind of seems a little rude now, right?
Next, if you drop to one knee to propose you may not be able to get up. This is less of a joke and more of a distinct possibility, especially if it’s at the end of 140.6 miles of torture. So what if you actually can’t get up? You’ll be in the way of all the people trying to finish.
It may have slipped your mind because you’re trying to seize the moment, but you haven’t crossed the finish line yet. That clock is still running. Oh, and you really need a shower. Your significant other may not forget that smell either.
Lastly, the logistics of this proposal sound difficult. You’re not about to carry an engagement ring with you for 70.3 or 140.6 miles. You might have to get some clearance from a race director if you’re getting a hand-off because getting things handed to you that aren’t provided on the course is against the rules.
If this is what you really want to do, it would be a better idea to not do it while on any part of the course. You’d probably be better off in the Athlete Village.
